GENEALOGY We extended our research to the Memphis Public Library, and directed our search in a different category. We realized how important it is for African American Women to trace their ancestry, especially since there were so many African American women who were active in the struggles of the African American Community. The Genealogy Section The genealogy section is huge containing an estimated 4000 books on genealogy. This area contains over 700 family histories, over 1500 county histories ftom almost every state in the union, with the majority, of course, being of the Tri-state area. It also includes Genealogy for Dummies. The Pedigree Chart
If you were to complete a blank pedigree chart by hand, you would start with yourself as the first person, on the extreme left side, then list your father in position #2 and your mother in position #3. Your father's parents would be listed in Position #4 and #5. Your mother's parents would be listed in position #6 and #7, and so forth. More detailed pedigree charts provide birth, marriage and death dates and places. 1st Generation / you 2nd Generation / your parents 3rd Generation / your grandparents
